Qantas Airways apologises with free tickets

Australia's Qantas Airways is offering free flights to passengers who were affected by the airline's decision to ground its entire fleet over a labour dispute. This is being seen as the first of a number of measures by the company to regain customer loyalty.

An expensive apology.

According to Qantas Airways, passengers who were unable to fly last weekend are eligible for a free return economy flight within Australia or to New Zealand.

Olivia Wirth of Qantas Airways said, "Clearly we do need to say sorry. We do need to rebuild the loyalty of our passengers back to Qantas."

The initiative will cost the airline over 20 million US dollars. Qantas grounded its fleet on October 29th in order to force a resolution to an ongoing dispute with trade unions over pay, conditions and job security.

The shutdown stranded thousands of travellers and angered the federal government. The authorities referred the issue to Australia's workplace umpire, which in turn ordered an end to the industrial action. Qantas says it will make further announcements shortly in relation to customers based outside Australia and for members of its frequent flyer program.
